Generous Shoppers in Buxton Praised - 24 Feb 10
Record numbers of gifts were donated to the Reverse Santa Appeal hosted by the Spring Gardens Shopping Centre and run in conjunction with the Buxton and District Lions Club. For the third year running the campaign urged visitors to the centre to GIVE a gift to Santa over the festive period. These were then distributed to children in the town who might not otherwise have received a present at Christmas.
“The Lions Club has been overwhelmed by the town’s response to the scheme, it is such a worthwhile cause and it is fantastic that the initiative brings a little joy and happiness to those less fortunate,” said Nick Townsend from the Buxton and District Lions Club.
“Many Christmas shoppers visiting the centre were even buying extra gifts just to donate to the scheme,” he added.
The centre received hundreds of gifts in the run up to Christmas, all of which were distributed by members of Buxton Social Services area office.
Linda Artingstall from the Buxton Area Social Services, said: “I would like to thank everyone who provided gifts to the Reverse Santa scheme, it has been a success once again. The children and families that benefit are always really appreciative.”
Centre manager at Spring Gardens Shopping Centre, Diana Golding, was also impressed by the response, she said: “Everyone who works at the centre was delighted with the level of response from local people this year. It’s a really popular appeal and despite the economic climate our shoppers have been extremely kind - they deserve a big thank you!”
