Spring Gardens Rowing Challenge - 06 Jan 10
The centre is offering shoppers the opportunity to hop onto a rowing machine and set the pace for a two-minute exercise – and the money raised will help Buxton’s Community First Responders.
Shopping Centre manager, Diana Golding, explained: “Buxton’s Barcelo Palace Hotel is helping us by supplying the rowing machine and staff to supervise the event. Simply by making a donation to the First Responder scheme shoppers can take up a two-minute exercise challenge. The person who has rowed the longest distance at the end of the day will win a month’s free membership at the hotel’s gymnasium, and there will be several prizes for the runners’ up.”
In addition, staff from the hotel will be offering free blood pressure testing, and will be on hand to give shoppers a whole host of helpful advice on keeping fit and living a healthier lifestyle in 2010.
Buxton’s Community First Responder group is run purely by volunteers, organised by St Johns Ambulance and East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). First Responders are taught to deal with life threatening situations such as heart attacks, loss of consciousness, choking and similar emergencies. They can often arrive at the scene of an incident before an ambulance can get there, which saves vital minutes.
Spring Gardens’ Assistant Manager Colin Beswick is a First Responder volunteer. He said: “The centre will be working hard this year to help raise money for the local group, and in particular to help buy the equipment needed by volunteer First Responders. The January event is a brilliant curtain raiser and will help raise awareness on the vital work we undertake in the town.”
