Spring Gardens’ Retailers Help Support First Responder Unit This Christmas - 23 Nov 09

Instead of sending each other Christmas cards, Debbie Martin from the centre’s Superdrug store, is calling on other retailers to donate funds to the Community First Responder scheme.

Debbie, who is a Beauty Advisor at Superdrug, said: “Sending Christmas cards is a traditional gesture, but donating a small amount of money instead to support a local cause, such as the Community First Responders, can make a huge difference to the lives of many local people.”

“It would be lovely if this is something that catches on. The more people who join in at the centre and around Buxton, the more money that can be raised and local lives saved.”

Buxton’s Community First Responders group is run purely by volunteers, in close association with St Johns Ambulance. First Responders are taught to deal with life threatening situations such as heart attacks, loss of consciousness, choking and similar emergencies. They can often arrive at the scene of an incident before an ambulance can get there, which saves vital minutes.

Spring Gardens’ Assistant Centre Manager, Colin Beswick, who is a volunteer for scheme, said: “The First Responder scheme is a vital lifeline in Buxton and Debbie’s idea for Christmas will help to make a difference. Any cash raised by the retailers will help us to save more lives within the community.”

Members of the public wishing to donate to the scheme can leave cash donations at Superdrug, or send a cheque made out to “St John Ambulance” to Colin Bewsick, Management Office, Spring Gardens Shopping Centre, Buxton SK17 6DF. Colin can be contacted on 01298 79320.
